Hundreds of people turned out in Northfields to see London's oldest allotments last weekend.

Dating back to 1832 - the Bishop of London and Lord of the Manor of Ealing ordered the enclosure of common land for gardening use. The Bishop - himself a keen gardener - thought the allotments would provide an alternative to drinking!

Now there are 60 full size plots and 79 half size, tenants pay £120 or £66 a year.

Despite the rain the open day had a steady number visiting and all enjoyed seeing the variety of plants and produce being cultivated and talking to bee keeper Tom Bickerdike.

It seems gardening has never been more popular.

There are 62 people on the waiting list for Northfields Allotments ( probably more after the open day!) which is expected to be for around 2/3 years.
