Nearly £14,000 has already been donated to the memorial fund set up by the family of murdered schoolgirl Alice Gross.

At her funeral Alice's family requested people support Youth Music, a charity which, every year, provides more than 90,000 young people with the chance to take part in music projects.

Alice was a talented musician herself and they felt that this was a fitting way to remember her. They said, “She loved music and loved making music and would have wanted other children to experience this joy."

Matt Griffiths, Executive Director, Youth Music said:

''We are humbled and honoured that Alice’s family have asked for donations to be made to Youth Music in her memory. I hope it might be a small comfort for them to know that the donations will enable children and young people facing significant challenges in their lives to have the opportunity for regular music-making. Our thoughts are with Alice’s family, relatives and friends at this difficult time.''

In addition to developing musical skills, Youth Music projects help young people to develop their creative and social skills. Many of the children they help face challenges in their lives including coping with disability, special educational needs, poverty, rural isolation, homelessness or living in care.

As we all saw from the videos circulated, 13 year-old Alice loved music and indeed attended one of Youth Music’s projects.

Currently Youth Music supports around 400 projects around the country including Music House for Children based in Shepherd’s Bush where Alice herself attended years ago.

Emma Hutchinson Director and Founder said it was obvious how much Alice enjoyed her sessions there. “She had a beautiful voice and a great deal of talent”

In the lead up to Christmas, Youth Music hopes that people putting on carol concerts with a fundraising objective will donate some of what’s raised to Alice’s Fund.
