The proposal to shut Northfields Library defies belief. It is newly re-built and the immediate area is currently being re-developed with a new Children's Centre, incorporating the Log Cabin, Scouts and the nursery. The park right next door is also being re-developed to incorporate the library. There is no logic to this crazy proposal.

The Labour Council can find £5,500,000 to build an unnecessary car park in Southall, but proposes closing a well used neighborhood library, which is almost the cheapest to run.

Councillor Kamaljit Dhindsa, the Council's cabinet member for Parks and Libraries, just doesn't get it. You don't announce such inflammatory proposals as shutting community libraries right after agreeing the budget; you don't shut a library when the design is specifically incorporated into a new Children's Centre; and you don't fund a car park in Southall in part by shutting local libraries.

Through EalingToday we urge your readers to tell Labour Councillors: "hands off community libraries"
