Levi Bellfield Tells Police He Killed Elizabeth Chau | |
Shares what he says is location of body of Ealing student May 16, 2023 Serial killer Levi Bellfield has told police officers during a recorded interview that he killed a student who disappeared from Ealing 24 years ago. Detectives visited him in his cell last week and, as well as confessing to the murder of Elizabeth Chau, he has shared the location where he claims he disposed of her body. Elizabeth Chau was taking a degree in Computer Studies at Thames Valley University when she vanished on 16 April 1999. She left college at around 5pm that day to return to her home in West Ealing and was seen by a friend on Ealing Broadway half an hour later. The last sighting of her was close to Ealing Police Station on Uxbridge Road at 6pm. Bellfield’s disclosure was made during a six-hour interview held under caution at HMP Frankland in Durham. Officers were alerted to his claims after he first made them to a prison visitor in October 2022. Bellfield also disclosed information about other attacks he made in London and Surrey against women before he was apprehended. Reportedly, detectives brought a map with them to the interview and asked Bellfield to point to the area where he says that Elizabeth’s body was left. During the interview he provided what he says was the method used to kidnap her and how she was killed. A spokesperson for the Met said, “On Tuesday 9 May 2023, a 54-year-old male was interviewed under caution. Inquiries continue. We can confirm we remain in contact with Elizabeth Chau’s family. At this time, we will not be providing an ongoing commentary. We have no comment to make.” Bellfield has a record of deceitfulness, manipulation and attention seeking behaviour so police are treating his claims with caution. Police had previously made a link between the disappearance of Elizabeth and that of 27-year-old Lola Shenkoya, who went missing from Ealing on Monday 3 January 2000 with Andrzej Kunowski dubbed "the Beast" who raped and murdered a 12-year-old girl in Hammersmith. He died in HMP Frankland, the same institution in which Bellfield is incarcerated, in 2009, Elizabeth’s brother, Minh-Vu, is quoted in the Guardian as saying, “We were very cautious. Bic [Elizabeth’s sister] recognised some of the material [in Bellfield’s alleged confession] that was not in the public domain.” Bellfield was jailed for life for the murders of 13-year-old Milly Dowler, 19-year-old Marsha McDonnell and 22-year-old Amélie Delagrange which took place between 2002 and 2004 as well as the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy.
