A 36-year-old man from Ealing has been jailed for 21 years at Isleworth Crown Court after he pleaded guilty to causing his mother serious injuries after setting her alight.

On Thursday 13 September 2018, Alexander Palit poured combustible liquid over his disabled and bedbound mother and set her on fire causing her serious burn injuries. Significant damage from fire was also caused to the property.

Following an extensive investigation, Palit was charged and remanded into judicial custody.

Palit pleaded guilty to Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) and Arson with the intent to endanger life and on Monday, 7 October, he was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by Judge HHJ Johnson.

The sentence was made up of 21 years' imprisonment (made up of a 16 year custodial term with an extended licence period of five years) for Section 18 GBH plus 12 years’ imprisonment concurrent for arson with intent to endanger life

This was a shocking attack on a vulnerable mother by her son, causing her serious injuries and substantial damage to her property by arson. The MPS takes domestic abuse of all kinds extremely seriously and we will endeavour to prosecute offenders to the full extent of the law.”
