A man facing a charge of murder at the Old Bailey was deeply in debt to loan sharks, the court has been told.

42-year-old Armen Aristakesyan, of Uxbridge Road, West Ealing is accused of killing Serafima Meshaka at her flat in Haven Green Court on Tuesday, 17 September 2019.

The 58-year-old company director died after suffering head injuries which the prosecution allege were inflicted by Armen Aristakesyan during a bungled burglary in which he was assisted by 38-year-old Aram Aristakesyan, 38 of Stanhope Road, Greenford

Both were arrested on Wednesday, 9 October 2019.

The court heard how Armen Aristakesyan owed several unlicensed lenders large sums of money including a six figure sum to a loan shark known as ‘The Turk’.

It is alleged he learnt that Ms Meshaka kept large sums of money at her flat and plotted to steal from her trying to arrange that she was out of her flat at the opera while he took the cash. Ms Meshaka looked after Russian students in the UK and worked part-time as a personal assistant to a Russian/Israeli businessman.

On, 18 September 2019, neighbours called the police due to their concerns about her welfare. When officers entered the flat in the early afternoon they found Ms Meshaka lying in a pool of dried blood in the shower. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

CCTV footage of Aristakesyan carrying what appeared to be a quite full ‘bag for life’ outside Haven Green Court was shown to jurors which the prosecution says proves that he was the last person to see her alive.

The trial continues at the Old Bailey.
