A project to turn an unused space in Hanwell into a community garden has won a grant of £18,000 from the Mayor of London’s Make London fund.

Dig aims to provide a resource at the site near Billets Hart Allotments to improve wellbeing and mental health, provide horticultural knowledge and provide job ready skills for those seeking work as well as alleviating isolation post lockdown.

The garden will also grow food for the community and provide a social hub for residents to come together.

The project is being support by Cultivate London, a social enterprise and charity, which has been running and managing several community gardens over the last decade in the West London area.

Auberon Bayley, CEO of Cultivate said, “This is a large site that was previously used as a hub for special needs. All it needs are some funds and a little TLC to get it up and running again. We plan to bring in many more community groups to the site and use it to its full potential. We are delighted that the Mayors office has seen the potential in this project and decided to support it.

“Now, more than ever people need access to these spaces where they can interact, learn, grow, relax, enjoy nature and just be with other people.”

“Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, Jules Pipe, said: “The Mayor and I believe our communities have some fantastic ideas on how to emerge from the pandemic and bring our city together. We’re proud to support this project and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the local community.”

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We’ve always done that and won’t be changing, in fact we’d like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.

If neither of these amounts is suitable for you then contact info@neighbournet.com and we can set up an alternative. All payments are made through a secure web site.

One-off donations are also appreciated. Choose The Amount You Wish To Contribute.
