Residents are invited to explore the Victorian school which was once home to Charlie Chaplin as Hanwell Community Centre opens its doors on Saturday, 17 August.

The centre will be holding an open day to showcase the variety of activities it has on offer for the community. The open day and will feature food and cake stalls, performances by local bands, arts and crafts activities, and displays from local sports and arts groups.

Hanwell Community Centre has a fascinating history, and those interested in old workhouses or Charlie Chaplin will have the chance to take a tour of the historic building. An exhibition of old photography of the centre and the Hanwell area will also be on display.

Those looking to sign up to a new sports group or take up a new hobby can find out more about what is on offer at the centre, and meet with local groups. The centre is home to a full size boxing ring, pottery suite, upholstery workshop, five-a-side football court, badminton courts and martial arts studios.

Function rooms are also available to hire, along with education and training suites. Hanwell Community Centre hosts children’s birthday parties and celebrations, wedding parties, religious events, conferences and exhibitions.

Councillor Julian Bell said: “Hanwell Community Centre is a significant and interesting part of our borough’s history, and has served the community for the past 70 years. The council is working hard to ensure it remains a prominent and accessible community venue for Hanwell and surrounding areas. The open day is a great opportunity for a fun day out for the whole family, as well as a chance to take a look at this key piece of our local history and to join a new sport team or hobby group.”

The open day will run from 11am to 4pm. Hanwell Community Centre is located on Westcott Crescent, Hanwell, W7 1PD.
